What to do against dry air at home?

Everyone has experienced it: a tickle in the throat, dry skin, headaches, difficulty concentrating or irritated eyes. Do you regularly suffer from these symptoms when you are at home? Then the air in your home is probably too dry. This is especially true in winter. The humidity outside is lower and the heating makes the air drier.

How does dry air occur?

Humidity is largely related to climate. Warm air can absorb more water than cold air, so humidity is much lower in the winter months.

Humidity in the winter months is around 30%, while the ideal humidity is between 50% and 60%.

Curious about the humidity in your home? You can check it with a hygrometer.

What are the symptoms?

If you breathe in air that is too dry, your lungs will absorb less oxygen. Water evaporates quickly in dry air and therefore in the throat and lungs, drying out the throat. This can cause symptoms such as a dry cough and sore throat. If there is a lot of dust in the house, the symptoms can get worse.

People often dismiss the symptoms of dry air as a common "cold" and do nothing about it. As well as a dry cough and/or sore throat, other symptoms can be caused by dry air, including:

  • Dry skin
  • Dry, burning eyes
  • Chapped lips
  • Headache
  • Exhaustion
  • Concentration problems
  • Lower immune system

How can you resolve dry air?

You can easily remedy dry air in your home. Whatever you do, make sure your home is always dust-free and well ventilated. This will help to maintain a healthy and comfortable indoor environment.

Radiator trays

or example, you can hang 'radiator trays' on the radiators. Refill them regularly with water.

Plants

Placing plants also contributes to a better indoor climate. This is because plants evaporate water, increasing humidity. Plants with large, green leaves in particular evaporate a lot of water.

Air humidifier

Placing radiator trays and plants is often enough to increase humidity. If not, consider a humidifier. With a humidifier, you can easily regulate the humidity yourself. Humidifiers come in a variety of designs and types. It is also possible to use a humidifier with a heat recovery system (MVHR).
